Radishes for your Gallbladder and Gallstones

There are several kinds of radishes in the world. In North America, we often think of the Cherry Belle variety that is red on the outside and white in the inside and is about an inch in diameter, but there are many other kinds:

  • the Daikon (originally from Japan),
  • the Cherry Belle (most common in North American supermarkets),
  • the Black Radish (excellent for your gallbladder),
  • and the Red King.

Due to their sulfur-based ingredients, radishes stimulate bile production and help break down fats — both of which are helpful if you have gallstone or gallbladder pain. If you have symptoms of gallbladder problems, eat a few radishes a day or work them into various gallbladder recipes. You can also take Black Radish powder in capsule or other supplement forms.

As with any supplement, be sure to check with your doctor if you’re pregnant, have gallstones, and/or are thinking of taking a medicinal amount.

Symptoms of Gallbladder Problems in Women

Symptoms of gallbladder problems in women are more likely to occur than they do in men, according to the American College of Gastroenterology, primarily because of the female hormones progesterone and estrogen. Women who have been pregnant, are on birth control pills, and/or hormone therapy (estrogen) are even more likely to develop gallstones and other symptoms.

The symptoms of gallbladder problems that are most common are:

  • Symptoms of gall bladder problems in womenPain in a woman’s gallbladder region: The gallbladder is located right below her liver, on the right side of her body half way between her throat and belly button. The pain be sharp and sudden, or a chronic ache.
  • Pain in her abdomen: Though her gallbladder may be having problems, other parts of her abdomen may hurt as well. The pain can be continual or when she presses on different parts of her abdomen.
  • Pain in her right shoulder blade: Gallbladder pain can be felt in her right shoulder blade.
  • Jaundice: The whites of her eyes or skin can become slightly yellow, or jaundiced.
  • Bloating, gas, or different looking stool: If her gallbladder isn’t working right, it can affect the rest of her digestive tract.
  • Fever, nausea, and vomiting: While these symptoms can indicate other health issues, they are also tied to gallbladder problems.

Bad Gallbladder | Do I have a bad gallbladder?

A bad gallbladder usually develops slowly over time. There are many types of a bad gallbladder, or gallbladder disease, such as cholecystitis, gallstones, polyps, and biliary dyskinesia.

For each type of bad gallbladder problem, there are different symptoms. However, the main ones that generally span all symptoms of gallbladder problems are:

  • Pain on the right side of your body, midway between your belly button and throat
  • General abdominal pain
  • Jaundice (yellowish eyes and skin)
  • Pain in your right shoulder blade
  • Gas, nausea, and/or vomiting.

Ginger for Gallstones and Gallbladder Health | Gallbladder and Ginger

Ginger can work wonders for your gallbladder and gallstones. Ginger thins bile, thins gallbladder sludge, and dissolves gallstones. It also helps with one of the main symptoms of gallbladder problems – nausea.  The primary active ingredients in ginger, shogaols and gingerols, help neutralize the acids in your stomach. Ginger’s closely related cousin, turmeric, is also wonderful for your gallbladder.

People around the world have used ginger for thousands of years to help calm stomach issues. From ginger ale, to ginger bread, to sliced raw ginger, so many recipes have been made to work ginger into seemingly unrelated recipes. It can be taken in many different ways: shredded or sliced straight from the root, tablets, softgels, powders, tictures, oils, liquids, as a tea, and supplement capsules.

One of the easiest, best recipes that we use is a simple ginger tea. You can buy a good sized piece of ginger root for about fifty cents. Cut about a two inch piece off of the root and peel it. (I just use a knife to cut off all of the brown skin.) Then cut the ginger into thin slices and boil it in 2 to 4 cups of water. I like to put a tablespoon of honey in as well, but it’s certainly not necessary. Let the “tea” boil for about 10 minutes, cool for a minute or two, and then pour it into a mug for a delicious, healthy drink. Besides being gallbladder healthy, this drink is also great for an upset stomach, motion sickness, or for fending off a cold.

As with any supplement, be sure to check with your doctor if you’re pregnant and are thinking of taking a medicinal amount.

Turmeric for Gallstones and Gallbladder Help | Gallbladder and Turmeric

Turmeric is widely noted a spice or supplement to help with gallbladder and gallstone symptoms. The turmeric spice is often used in curry dishes and mustards, giving it a vibrant orangish-yellow color. Curcumin is the beneficial component in turmeric that decreases inflammation, destroys liver cancer cells, and most importantly for the gallbladder, dissolves gallstones.

Your body can best use turmeric when it is eaten along with black pepper. You can also take a daily turmeric supplement.

Artichokes for Gallbladder Health and Gallstones | Gallbladder and Artichokes

The artichoke is wonderful for gallbladder and gallstone help. It encourages more bile production. This, in turn, can thin down the proportion of cholesterol in your gallbladder which can help dissolve gallstones. Artichokes simultaneously reduce cholesterol production by your liver.

While fun to eat the artichoke “meat” from the leaves, it’s often very slow. Artichoke hearts, of course, are much easier to eat. Make sure to add them to salads, pastas, sandwiches, and more. The easiest of all, though, is taking artichoke extract or supplements.

Feta Cheese for Gallbladder Health

Feta: Best choice for your gallbladder

Feta cheese is one of the best choices for your gallbladder and gallstones. It has less saturated and total fat than nearly all other cheeses (only mozzarella and cottage cheese have less fat per ounce.) Also, because of its powerful taste, it’s tough to eat as much of it at a time as you would with other cheeses. As with other cheeses, eat feta sparingly, but it’s one of the best choices of cheese for your gallbladder.

What is feta cheese?

Feta is a cheese that used to be made with sheep and goat’s milk in Greece and other Balkan countries. Now, it’s often made commercially with cow’s milk. In all cases, it’s made in a brine solution that adds the salty taste and gives it such high sodium content. It’s an aged crumbly cheese that is usually crumbled over Greek salads, used to make traditional Greek dishes such as spanakopita, and mixed into pastas and other salads.

The World’s Largest Recorded Gallstone

According to Guinness World Records, in 1952, a 13.84 lb gallstone (6.29 kg) was removed from an 80-year old woman in London. Can you imagine? That’s a bowling ball under your ribcage. It goes to show that while gallstone flushes are often recommended, there are always exceptions. Does anyone have other large and/or heavy gallstone or otherwise shocking gallstone stories?

Gallbladder Help with Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has been touted as a folk remedy and supplement to help your gallbladder and gallstone pain. This natural home remedy, also called cider vinegar, ACV for short, contains acetic, lactic, and citric acids. However, the malic acid apple cider vinegar contains may be the most beneficial if you have gallbladder problems.

During fermentation, the apple cider sugars are broken down first into alcohol and then into vinegar. Unlike white vinegar, apple cider vinegar is usually a light brown color. The unpasteurized, unfiltered kind often develops a sediment cloud called “the mother,” which many claim is the most health beneficial part of the vinegar. “The mother” is acetic acid bacteria.

This may be beneficial for gallstones. While clearly ACV is clearly an acid, when your body processes the vinegar, the end result is your body becomes more alkaline, which can help your bile become more in balance with our natural diet of lots of fruits and vegetables. (Western diets of meat and grains are highly acidic when metabolized.)

Possibly more important than the alkalizing effect of apple cider vinegar, are the benefits of malic acid. This acid is widely claimed to break down and soften gallstones, as well as thinning bile and gallbladder sludge.

You can buy apple cider vinegar at nearly any grocery store, and buying the organic, unfiltered, unpasteurized brands (like Braggs), is recommended. To add some apple cider vinegar to your diet, use it to create your own salad dressings with extra virgin olive oil, a teaspoon or two in a glass of water for an energy pick-me-up, or even taken as tablets. Keep in mind that too much of a good thing can be unhealthy –too much ACV can damage your tooth enamel and hurt your esophagus over time…not that guzzling down ¼ cup or so would be that easy…

Recipe for Gallbladder Healthy Lunches: Curried Chicken and Apple Sandwiches

Here’s another recipe that is filling, delicious and helps your gallbladder – Curried chicken and apple sandwiches. Apples and turmeric are fantastic for a healthy gallbladder diet!

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz of cooked, chopped chicken (a 12.5 oz. can of 99% fat-free chicken will do)
  • 2 tablespoons of low-fat mayonnaise (this is the only ingredient that isn’t particularly gallbladder friendly)
  • 1 large apple, chopped into ¼” pieces
  • 1 Tbs of chopped onion
  • 1 Tbs of yellow curry spice with turmeric
  • Sliced tomatoes and/or fresh spinach to top the salmon
  • 8 slices of whole grain, low-sugar bread

Combine the chicken, mayonnaise, apple, onion, and curry spice. Spoon the mixture evenly on to four pieces of bread. Place tomato and/or spinach on each mixture, and finish each sandwich with the remaining slices of bread. Makes 4 sandwiches.

Gallbladder Recipe for Healthy Lunches: Salmon Sandwiches

Here’s another recipe that is filling, delicious and helps your gallbladder – salmon sandwiches.

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz of cooked, chopped salmon (wild Salmon is best, and one can will work as well, but fresh is always better and usually higher in gallbladder healthy Omega-3 fatty acids)
  • 2 tablespoons of low-fat mayonnaise (this is the only ingredient that isn’t particularly gallbladder friendly)
  • 1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes (or a couple of dashes of Tabasco or other hot sauce will do)
  • 1 Tbs of chopped onion
  • 1 Tbs of chopped garlic
  • 1 Tbs of lemon juice
  • 1 Tbs of well drained capers
  • Sliced tomatoes and/or fresh spinach to top the salmon
  • 6 slices of whole grain, low-sugar bread

Combine the salmon, mayonnaise, red pepper flakes, onion, garlic, lemon juice, and capers. Spoon the mixture evenly on to three pieces of bread. Place tomato and/or spinach on each mixture, and finish each sandwich with the remaining slices of bread.

Milk Thistle for Gallbladder, Liver, and Gallstone Problems

Milk thistle is often used as a natural remedy to treat symptoms of gallbladder problems, liver issues, and gallstone pain. The milk thistle plant has been used for more than 2000 years as a health and detox remedy, and is currently the most common natural plant cure used in Russia where alcoholism, and consequently liver damage, is rampant.

While all parts of the milk thistle plant can be eaten as food, most of the benefits come from the seeds which contain the beneficial compound, silymarin. For the gallbladder system, this supplement thins the bile and increases its flow. In turn, this can help slowly dissolve gallstones, thin down gallbladder sludge, and cleanse the gallbladder and liver. Silymarin also is a powerful antioxidant, cleans the liver of toxins, and even helps repair damaged liver cells.

It’s usually recommended to take 600mg a day of milk thistle supplements for serious liver issues such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. So, for general gallbladder health and cleansing, taking about 200mg three times a week is sufficient. Luckily, there are very few side effects noted from milk thistle.
